Brooke McAlary is the author of the bestselling book SLOW, creator/host of The Slow Home Podcast which has had over 8 million downloads to date and been running for 5 years. Brooke’s latest book CARE, the radical art of taking time, is all about the need for small care, particularly when there are so many global stresses surrounding us. This book was created out of necessity during the height of the pandemic at a time when ‘care’ seemed most important in our lives. With global pandemics, climate catastrophes and political and social upheaval being a real part of our day-to-day lives, it is hard to find a sustainable and realistic approach to care. To relieve some of the pressure, Brooke decided to break the concept of care down into 9 core ideas: Connection. Kindness. Awe. Nature. Making. Movement. Play. Rest. Healing. It is with these concepts that Brooke focuses on smaller personal acts of care, ones that can be achieved and are accessible no matter your socio-economic status or social background (No caviar facemasks recommended for ‘self-care’ here!). Brooke’s acts of care are broken into: ‘if you have half a minute’, ‘if you have half an hour’, and ‘if you have half a day or more’.
